Is Country Living Right for You? 7 Questions to Ask Before Leaving the City

A little more space. A quieter morning. A porch where you can drink your coffee without looking straight into your neighbor’s kitchen.

I understand why country living appeals to so many buyers. But before you start searching for a home on acreage, think about what your everyday life would look like there.

You might love the idea of country living, but how much country is right for you? These seven questions can help you figure that out.

1. How Much Convenience Are You Willing to Trade?

In the city, running out of milk might mean a quick trip around the corner. In the country, that same errand could take a little more planning.

Think about the places you visit regularly: the grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, gym, or your favorite drive-through. How far would you be comfortable driving to each one?

It sounds simple, but those everyday conveniences can be one of the biggest adjustments. Before you fall in love with a property, take a drive to the places you would actually use.

2. Do You Want More Land, or More Privacy?

These aren’t always the same thing.

You might picture five acres when what you really want is a backyard where you can relax without feeling crowded. A smaller property with mature trees and the right layout could give you the setting you’re looking for.

On the other hand, if you want room for animals, a garden, or outdoor hobbies, the amount and usability of the land will matter.

Start with how you want to use the space. That will help you decide how much of it you need.

3. What Do You Want Your Weekends to Look Like?

Picture a Saturday morning at your future home.

Are you excited to mow, work in the garden, check fences, and tackle outdoor projects? Or would you rather spend your time traveling, meeting friends, or relaxing?

There’s no wrong answer. But owning more property can add responsibilities to your schedule, whether you handle the work yourself or hire someone.

Choose a property that fits the life you enjoy, including how you want to spend your time off.

4. Have You Tried the Drive on a Regular Weekday?

A scenic drive during a Sunday afternoon showing can feel very different when you’re heading to work early or coming home after a long day.

Before choosing a location, try the commute during your normal travel times. Think beyond work, too. Consider appointments, evening plans, and any activities that regularly take you into town.

Ask yourself: would you still enjoy this drive several times a week?

The goal is to find a place you’re happy to come home to without overlooking what it takes to get there.

5. Can You Stay Connected the Way You Need To?

A peaceful setting is easier to enjoy when you can still do the things your day requires.

If you work from home, take online classes, or rely on video calls, check internet options at the exact address before making a decision. Contact providers directly about available service, speeds, and installation.

Test your phone while you’re there, too, in the house and outside. Don’t assume that service in a nearby town tells you what you’ll have at the property.

6. Have You Experienced the Area Beyond the Showing?

One visit gives you a first impression. A few visits can help you picture living there.

If possible, see the area at different times of day. Notice the roads, surrounding properties, nearby activity, and what the setting feels like after dark.

Country living can include barking dogs, livestock, equipment, and other sounds you may not expect if your picture of it is complete silence.

Take time to get familiar with the surroundings and decide whether they feel right for you.

7. How Far Into the Country Do You Actually Want to Go?

You don’t have to choose between a busy subdivision and a home miles from everything.

Your ideal move might be a larger lot near town, a few acres with a manageable commute, or a small-town neighborhood with a little more breathing room.

Before you search, write down three things you want to gain and three conveniences you want to keep. Maybe you want privacy, room for a workshop, and a bigger backyard, but still want groceries and restaurants close by.

That list can help us narrow down locations and properties that make sense for you.
